Welcome to Food and Nutrition Services!

Good nutrition and learning go hand in hand.

The Burbank Unified School District Food and Nutrition Services department is made up of a team of food and nutrition professionals that are dedicated to students' health, well being and their ability to learn. We support learning by promoting healthy habits for lifelong nutrition and fitness practices.

Meals, foods and beverages sold or served at schools meet state and
federal requirements which are based on the USDA Dietary Guidelines.
We provide students with access to a variety of affordable and appealing
foods that meet the health and nutrition needs of our students.

 

Free nutrition and lunch meals are available for distribution on Fridays from 8:30 am to 10:30 am ONLY
until July 9th at the following sites:
Luther Burbank Middle School, John Muir Middle School, and Dolores Huerta (formerly Jordan) Middle School

SUMMER MEAL DISTRIBUTION PLAN

  • Food will not be sold on a daily basis and students will not have access to the cafeteria. Every Friday the three middle schools will have a drive through/walk-up distribution pick-up opportunity where families will receive 5 days’ worth of nutrition and lunch meals for their student. Distribution times will be from 8:30 am – 10:30 am.
  • Students do not need to be present to collect their meals on the distribution day.
  • Families can send another person to pick up meals if they cannot pick up meals during the distribution pick up time.

Distribution Locations

Pick up hours between 8:30 am – 10:30 am Fridays through July 9 ONLY– look for Black & White Food Distribution Signs

Luther – Down the driveway next to the administration building
Huerta (Jordan) – Field entrance off Oak – Lunch shelter area
Muir – Enter through gate off of Kenneth, pick up at back door of kitchen loading dock and exit down by the lower field gate onto Walnut

FAQS

Will Food be available for my student(s)?

Yes,  every Friday each school will have a drive through/walk-up distribution pick-up opportunity where families will receive 5 days’ worth of nutrition and lunch meals for their student(s). Distribution times will be from 8:30am – 10:30 am. Distribution is every Friday through July 9.

Do I have to pay for the food?

There is No Charge for meals at this time.

Can I just get one or two days’ worth of food?

Not at this time. This type of service is bulk distribution.

I have 3 students who all attend different schools. Can I pick up all three meals kits from just one school site?

Yes. You may pick up from either Luther, Huerta (formerly Jordan) and Muir Middle Schools only.

I work on Friday’s and can’t pick up the meals. What should I do?

Families can send another person to pick up meals if they cannot pick up meals during the distribution pick up time. Students do not need to be present to collect their meals on the distribution day.

Where do I go to pick up the food at the school?

Look for a black and white sign that says Food Distribution.

National School Meal Programs:

The Burbank Unified School District takes part in the
National School Lunch and National School Breakfast Programs.

 

The National School Meal Programs dictate that all of our children must be offered a complete meal through the Food Service Department which meets the nutritional guidelines of the USDA.

A complete Nutrition (Breakfast) meal consists of 1 entree item of grain, 1 meat or meat alternative may be offered, 1/2 cup fruit or 4 oz juice, and 1 milk. A student must take at least 3 different food items out of the 4 food items offered but may take all 4. At least 1 food item must be fruit or juice.

A complete Lunch meal consists of 1 entree item of meat or meat alternative and grain, 1 milk, 1/2 cup fruit or 4 oz juice, and 1/2 cup vegetable. A student must take at least 3 food components out of the 5 food items offered but may take all 5. At least 1 component must be fruit or vegetable. 

A choice of 2 or more fruits, juice, and vegetables are offered daily as well as Fat-Free and 1% Low Fat milk.

Individual food items that are nutritionally compliant are available on an "a la carte" basis. Snack items, such as milk, bottled water, pizza slice, and cookies may be available for individual purchase in the cafeteria but do not qualify for inclusion in the National School Meal Programs.
